Structural and Foundation Engineering for a New School Building

    New School Building

    Project Overview

For this project we calculated the structure of a new school building and the pile distribution for the foundations. Since the soil was not of the best quality, piles were required, and the pile caps were calculated using the strut-and-tie method. The concrete part was checked for bending and crack width. For the upper part, vibrations of the concrete and CLT slabs were checked. Fire design was also a key consideration for the timber elements, and due to high fire-resistance time requirements with no additional fire protection, the walls were made thicker than usual.

    Project Challenge

For this project we had bad ground conditions, so pile foundations were needed. To ensure optimal pile distribution, a pile group coefficient was calculated and used for the design.

For the timber part, fire design and vibration design were also analysed.

    Structural Modelling and Load Assessment

Arcus Engineering developed a finite element model of the steel, concrete and timber structure and evaluated its behaviour under the required load combinations.

    The analysis considered:

    • self-weight and permanent actions
    • imposed loads
    • relevant horizontal actions (wind and seismic loading)
    • global stability
    • internal forces and deformations
