Coal Mill Structure, Blast resistant - Germany

    Project Overview

Arcus Engineering performed structural and connection analysis for an industrial coal mill structure in Germany. In addition to operational and structural loads, the engineering assessment included blast-related effects associated with the project's industrial design conditions.

    Project Challenge

Coal-processing structures can be subject to demanding combinations of permanent, operational, equipment-related and accidental loads.

For this project, the structural model and connection design needed to account for the defined blast-related action in addition to the standard design conditions.

    Structural Modelling and Load Assessment

Arcus Engineering developed a finite element model of the steel structure and evaluated its behaviour under the required load combinations.

    The analysis considered:

    • self-weight and permanent actions
    • operational equipment loads
    • imposed loads
    • relevant horizontal actions
    • blast-related design effects
    • global stability
    • internal forces and deformations
